ARWA OTHMAN, an activist from Yemen speaks about child marriage, and the threats against women human rights defenders calling for an end to this practice.
The tenth video of the UN Human Rights Office campaign to honour women human rights defenders in commemoration of Beijing+20.
Ms. Othman explains how her organization has been working to change the law in Yemen to raise the minimum age of marriage. In advocating against child marriage, she and her colleagues have faced accusations of promoting adultery or of being “non-believers,” and the dangers have worsened in this time of insecurity. She calls for the re-instatement of State authority and rule of law, for the protection of all human rights.
