Urgent response to forced/child marriage of a 12 year old girl in Kenya
Last week, Equality Now and our partner, Hope Beyond Foundation, facilitated the rescue of a 12 year old girl from a forced marriage of four years in Kajiado County, Kenya. She was eight years old and had undergone FGM when her father forced her to marry a 37 year old man.
The girl, who has never been to school, is pretty keen on getting an education so that she can secure her future. Our program officer, Felister Gitonga is working closely with our partner to bring together state and non-state agencies in ensuring that she and other survivors of harmful practices get justice.
VICTORY: Sierra Leone lifts discriminatory ban on pregnant girls attending school
This week, the government of Sierra Leone finally lifted the discriminatory ban that prohibits pregnant schoolgirls from attending school, heralding the beginning of a remarkable era for adolescent girls in the country.
