mustbe HERCHOICE

Today’s Monday inspiration are these girls from Ghana, active in the Her Choice programme, who have pivoted during the global pandemic. In Ghana, young married girls who are unable to go to school due to pregnancy are left without skills or knowledge. With training from Her Choice partner The Hunger Project, they learn skills such as dressmaking which enables them to earn an income and gain economic empowerment.

In response to COVID-19, these same girls were quickly mobilised to make masks out of locally made resources and sell them to their community at a low cost. When people gain confidence and are empowered to make decisions for themselves, they can respond to a crisis with innovation, and initiative. This is just one example of the incredible creativity and resilience we’ve seen globally:

'The vocational centers established across the ten Her Choice epicenters have demonstrated innovation and self initiative by sewing face masks using local materials. This has given community partners easy access to face masks at a lower cost and have reduced the risk of exposure to COVID-19 infection. They therefore have the confidence to go about the activities and make a living.' Originally posted by The Hunger Project NZ #mustbeherchoice #endchildmarriage
