mustbe HERCHOICE

Her Choice will be present at the ICPD convention in Nairobi that starts tomorrow. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the ground breaking International Conference on Population and Development (ICPD), which took place in Cairo in 1994. In that year 179 countries committed themselves to the goal of empowering women. The goal: to strengthen the development of these women, their families and communities.

This treaty will be extensively discussed at the three-day summit. Gerald Kato, coordinator of Her Choice in Uganda and Miet Chielens, coordinator of Her Choice at The Hunger Project Nederland will be participating.

Our commitment at the ICPD:
The Her Choice alliance commits to zero harmful practices, including child marriage and female genital mutilation (FGM). The 27 partner organizations of the Her Choice alliance in 10 countries in Africa and Asia commit to:

i) empower 200.000 girls by providing the opportunity to build their knowledge and skills to exercise their right to choose if, when, and whom to marry;
ii) mobilize 3000 communities to raise awareness of the harmful consequences of child marriage and FGM, change the attitudes and reduce acceptance among those who make the decision to marry girls as children;
iii) work with men and boys to raise awareness of the benefits of a community which values and supports girls and women to fulfil their potential;
iv) provide safe quality schooling including comprehensive sexuality education and accessible, youth-friendly health services to remove the economic and structural drivers of child marriage for the most vulnerable girls. #mustbeherchoice #endchildmarriage #shedecides #icpd25
