This week Her Choice alliance member The Hunger Project-Ghana celebrated the graduation of four ladies who followed the Vocational Skill learning programme of Her Choice. Two years ago, these four girls dropped out of Junior High School and became adolescent mother. They decided to commence a new path to financial independence by following the Vocational Skill learning programme.
This programme is aimed at providing needy teenage mothers with vocational and entrepreneurship skills to restore hope and transform their future and hence the entire future generation with socio-economic empowerment. There were given certificates and sewing start up kits (sewing machines & accessories) to assist them as they begin their new journey.
Based on this success, Her Choice alliance member The Hunger Project Ghana is supporting 13 extra married girls & adolescent mothers also under the Mem-Chemfre Epicenter to acquire a skill in sewing, bakery & hairdressing. The Mem-Chemfre Epicenter is the tenth to receive this support from the Her Choice programme.
Her Choice seeks to stop child marriage, provide girls and young women equal rights and opportunities to live their dreams. Her Choice also provides avenues to improve opportunities for teen mothers by facilitating their return to the formal school system, be that primary school or secondary school, or vocational training.
Teenage mothers (% of women ages 15-19 who have had children or are currently pregnant) in Ghana was reported at 17.8 % in 2016, according to the World Bank collection of development indicators, compiled from officially recognized sources.
