WHAT WOULD PEOPLE SAY?
A very common question we hear among the Asian community. It is also a common reason for underage marriage. How you ask?
1. A teenage girl aged 14 has a crush on a 21 year old boy. The girl is underage but the boy is slightly above the “legal” age. They have sex (which is illegal of course). Girl gets pregnant.
“WHAT WOULD PEOPLE SAY?”.
Solution: Get them married.
2. 13 year old gets raped by 40 year old man. Girl get pregnant.
“WHAT WOULD PEOPLE SAY?”
Solution: Get them married.
3. Man grooms 15 year old girl. Girl falls head over heels for man
“WHAT WOULD PEOPLE SAY”
Solution: Get them married.
These aren't imaginary situations. It is the reality of child marriage in Malaysia based on real cases. We are so consumed by what would people say that we disregard the reality of the situation. Instead of promoting sexual relation health education, we marry the child off, because marriage = people will not say anything now.
We are all people. We need to start saying what is right instead of judging. We need to help instead of commenting.
