Child marriage stopped near Paramakudi – Girl’s father pleads ignorance of law prohibiting marriage..

RAMANATHAPURAM On March 3, 2014

Officials of Childline, Social Welfare Department and Police have rescued a prospective child bride by stopping her marriage with a 25-year-old man, scheduled to be held on Monday.

After the toll-free ‘Childline 1098’ received a call about the marriage on Saturday evening, the officials visited the 17-year-old girl’s house at Nenthoni near Paramakudi on Sunday, and persuaded her parents to stop the marriage after explaining to them the law prohibiting marriages of girls below 18 years of age and the health problems the child brides would face.

S. Kanagaraj, coordinator, Childline, accompanied by Social Welfare Department official Balusamy, Anti-Human Trafficking Police Sub-Inspector Anitha and local Village Administrative Officer (VAO) Sathish Kumar obtained a written undertaking from her parents that they would not conduct the marriage on Monday and wait till the girl completed 18 years of age.

Pleads ignorance

The girl’s father, a painter, pleaded ignorance of the law prohibiting child marriage.

Mr.Kanagaraj said the VAO had been asked to visit the marriage hall in Paramakudi to ensure that the marriage was not conducted on Monday. The girl was to marry K. Arumugam of Peraiyur in Mudukulathur taluk. He was working in a shop in Chennai and his family had also been informed of the development, he said.

A conversation with the girl, a Class IX dropout, revealed that she was not interested in the marriage, Mr.Kanagaraj said, adding if she desired to pursue her studies, the Social Welfare Department and Child Welfare Committee would help her join a school and continue her studies.
