Child marriage is an issue that should be given as much as attention a sensational news gets. The causes of child marriage can be categorized into three. First of all, gender inequality correlates with the growth of child marriage. This is said so because, the idea of girls not having enough values as much as boys do in this society not only is sickening to deal with, but also promotes the concept of older men has the power of marrying young girls who are still minors. Patriarchy, a system projecting men as the primer sex in this society always opens a path for older men to force young girls to get married to them. On the other hand, the desire to control female sexuality on the way a girl dresses up, her behaviour, her manners and who she is allowed to meet, also provokes child marriage to happen as older women are more prone to show objections over men’s actions whereas, child are not physically nor mentally prepared for what is being thrown at them.
Moreover, child marriage is induced by the drowning of a family in poverty. Parents who are financially unstable and are facing numerous problems in the aspect of providing their children with basic necessities are driven towards the idea of marrying their children to individuals who could financially take care of their children, regardless of the age differences. In other cases, marriage of a child is widely known as a way of repaying debts. Hence, families with unsteady income have the high possibilities of getting involved in child marriage, willingly and also unwillingly. Apart from that, the whole idea of sending dowry to the groom’s family has always been a threat to families with lower income. Therefore, the younger the child is, the lower the dowry will be expected as the child is young, pretty and uneducated.
Last but not least, tradition and societal pressure also causes child marriage to continue haunting the lives of many naïve children all around the world. In many places, child marriage is a traditional practice that is being followed and kept alive through generations. When a girl reaches her puberty, she is viewed as physically ready to have a family of her own and to burden herself with responsibilities of a wife. This is truly unacceptable, but it is still a known as a sensible way of thinking in certain communities. Besides that, societal pressure of not letting their children to have a love marriage and also the perception of preventing children from having premarital sex prompt the society to encourage child marriage. This can also be related to the strong ego of certain parents who recommend child marriage as the only option of protecting the families’ honour when their children are caught of having a romantic relationship with the opposite sex. Tradition and societal pressure do not only ruin lives of many children in the form of child marriage but also highly halts a potential growth in a society for a more open-minded and rational communities.
