Tanzania Ending Child Marriage Network – TECMN

Duty Calling; Week of Advocacy!!

Today we started advocacy sessions with Tanzania Women Parliamentary Group (TWPG)
in Dodoma by engaging Parliamentarian Committees towards advocating for amendment of Discriminatory Law of Marriage Act 1971. Governments need to have clear and consistent legislation that establishes 18 as the minimum age of marriage. Adequate safeguards must be in place to ensure that parental consent or other exceptions are not used to force girls into marriage. This is a continous struggle that is carried out by Tanzania Ending Child Marriage Network – TECMN under Children's Dignity Forum – CDF. MPs were shocked to hear 36% of girls are married before age 18 as the existing Law allows girls to be married at age 14 & 15. This was during my remarks on status of child marriage in Tanzania & its consequences for country development.
