Unchained At Last for End Child Marriage
Fraidy Reiss, expert on child and forced marriage and founder of Unchained At Last, describes the problem of child and forced marriage in the United States, and her own abusive marriage she was forced to enter at the age of 19.
She says: “Child marriage destroys girls' lives. Right here in the U.S., marriage before 18 is linked to devastating health consequences, including heart attack, cancer, diabetes, stroke, almost every psychiatric disorder. It means a girl likely will not finish high school, let alone college. It means a much greater chance of poverty. It significantly increases the risk that a girl or woman will be beaten by her spouse.”
Research conducted by Unchained at Last shows that between 2000-2010, an estimated quarter of a million children were married in the U.S.–the vast majority of them girls married to adult men.
