“My name is Ousseina, I'm 22 years old, I'm trained in sewing. It has been about 6 months since I learned about the coronavirus disease on the radio. COVID-19 has really impacted our lives because this disease has prevented us from enjoying our lives to the fullest. To limit the spread of the virus, we have even been forbidden to travel, attend wedding ceremonies and go to places of worship or markets. Today, by adopting hygiene measures, our living situation has improved. Before, I could not go to my [sewing] training, nor see my friends, but now, I can move around, go to the workshop where I am learning sewing, and visit my family and friends provided that I take all the necessary precautions. During the health crisis of COVID-19, I tried to do my part to support my relatives through sensitization. In my opinion, we need to put more emphasis on awareness and physical distancing. We, the young girls of this region, should mobilize ourselves more to make our contribution.”
Adolescent girls like Ousseina are spreading awareness about COVID-19 to their families and communities. Worldwide, young women like Ousseina are leading efforts to stop COVID-19 and its harmful impact. Now more than ever, adolescent girls and young women need to be meaningfully engaged in the COVID-19 response.
