Girls Not Brides for End Child Marriage
“I knew it was against the law to marry a girl before she is 18 but my family didn’t understand – so what could I do? I think if a girl is ready it’s okay for her to get married, but it’s not good for her to move into her in-law’s house until she’s finished school. It’s important that a girl is educated so she’s not dependent on anyone else.”
Radha, now 17 was married when she was 16 along with her older sister Lalita. Thanks to support from Urmul Rural Health Research and Development Trust, Radha has not gone to live with her sister at her in-law’s house as she is completing her education and hopes to get a good job. When we met Radha, she was attending a national exam for gifted students. She was one of a small number of students from the rural villages who were invited to sit the exam.
